The consumer watchdog says its win in the Federal Court against energy companies engaged in illegal door-to-door selling practices is momentous.
Neighbourhood Energy and Australian Green Credits have been fined a total of $1 million for not leaving people's homes when asked, ignoring do-not-knock stickers and making misleading and deceptive statements.
It is the first win the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has had using the new provisions of the Australian Consumer Law that address unsolicited door-to-door sales.
The consumer watchdog says the decision sets a precedent that companies can be fined a maximum of $50,000 every time one of their salespeople ignore a visible do-not-knock sign on a household's door.
The ACCC's chairman Rod Sims says the decision will have a profound effect on consumer
protection.
