Same-sex married couples across Australia will be counted for the first time in national census figures released today, 21 June 2012.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will reveal key results from the 2011 census this morning, including the number of same-sex couples who identified themselves as being married.
"I think it will be a reality check for the decision-makers in Canberra," said Alex Greenwich, national convener for the Australian Marriage Equality lobby group.
Mr Greenwich said many same-sex couples had travelled overseas to be married in countries that recognise their relationships while waiting for Australian laws to be changed.
"There are people in same-sex marriages throughout Australia - and these couples are actively discriminated against throughout their lives," he said.
