The Federal Circuit Court of Australia (Consequential Amendments) Act 2013 was assented last week in the Federal Parliament, making minor amendments to a number of Acts in connection with the passing of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia Legislation Amendment Act 2012.
The Federal Circuit Court of Australia Legislation Amendment Act 2012 was passed in November last year and acted to rename the Federal Magistrates Court to the 'Federal Circuit Court of Australia.'
In a media release earlier this month, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said that the name change served to recognise the "prominence of the Federal Magistrate Court's circuit work and its accessibility for all court users," and would more accurately reflect the Court's modern role.
Federal Magistrates will also be renamed 'Judges' to better reflect their role and jurisdiction.
The latest Act updates references to the Court's new name across a range of Commonwealth legislation, which will "ensure a smooth transition for the Court and its users."
