High Court Appoints Keane as 50th Judge

Justice Patrick Keane has been signed in as Australia’s 50th High Court Justice to replace his predecessor, Justice Dyson Heydon.
The 60 year old signed his oath of office before current and past High Court Justices, including Heydon who he singled out for particular praise. Justice Keane told the court that he was concerned about media portrayals of the judiciary in a privileged country where judges are not the champions of elite interests.
Justice Keane begins his High Court career today with the Mining Resource Rent Tax challenge. He joins the High Court after leaving his previous appointment at the Federal Court. Before this, he was the Solicitor General for Queensland for many years. Federal Attorney General Mark Dreyfuss has highlighted the fact that Justice Keane, in his noteworthy career, has appeared before the High Court over 50 times.
