Fair Work Australia has alleged that doctors working at the Medical Centre 2000 in Liverpool have deliberately underpaid a blind secretary due to her disability.
Ms El-Ali was employed as a part-time receptionist between February 2010 and February 2012. During her time employed with the practice, Ms El-Ali was paid a flat rate of $7 and then $8 an hour, which is 40 per cent below the entitled health professionals and support services award wage. Further to this, the documents showed that she had worked 13 public holidays and was underpaid by more than double what she earning.
The documents further show that other female receptionists who worked in the same practice and completed similar tasks and similar hours were paid a much higher wage than Ms El-Ali. The doctors have so far made no comment regarding this matter.
The case is due to be heard before the Federal Magistrates Court in Sydney on March 15.
