NT Judge brands mandatory sentence as an injustice

The Northern Territory Criminal Lawyers Association has renewed its calls for mandatory sentencing to be abolished, after a man who had pulled out of a planned murder at the last minute was sentenced to life in prison.
Zak Grieve, 20, was one of two men convicted of involvement in the contract killing of 41-year-old Katherine man Ray Niceforo, who was bludgeoned to death in 2011.
He was given a life sentence, with a non-parole period of 20 years.
In handing down the sentence in the Northern Territory Supreme Court yesterday, Justice Dean Mildren said it was an injustice, but was mandatory under minimum sentencing laws.
