Global carrier Emirates has been ordered to pay $10 million in penalties by the Federal Court, for breaching the Trade Practices Act 1974 by engaging in cartel conduct.

The ruling comes as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) prepares to launch proceedings against a number of international airlines for alleged cartel conduct, in relation to price of fuel and other surcharges.

The ACCC said in a release that Emirates is the tenth airline to settle in the proceedings.

“This settlement with Emirates brings the total penalties ordered in Australia against international airlines involved in the cartel to $68 million," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.
