Australia has appointed a new High Court judge. Mr Stephen Gageler, SC, who has been the Commonwealth Solicitor General since 2008 will join the bench when current High Court Justice Gummow retires in October. Commonwealth Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, has said ‘I always have said that the best person for the job would be chosen. I believe that Stephen is the best person for the job.’
Mr Gageler completed his bachelor of law and economics at the National Australian University and a master of laws at Harvard. Mr Gageler will be the first High Court appointed justice who was a Commonwealth Solicitor General since Sir Anthony Mason.
Paul Daley, the clerk of Eleven Wentworth chambers, where Mr Gageler worked from 1991 until 2008, described Mr Gageler as ''one of the most humble barristers''. ''He is one of the most unassuming, down to earth [senior counsels] you would ever meet. Everyone just absolutely loved him,'' he said.
