Federal Privacy Laws to be amended to Better Protect Personal Information

The Attorney Ceneral (Cth) has revealed plans to reform privacy laws to provide better protect for personal information and to enhance the powers of the federal privacy commissioner.
The intent of the laws is stated extending privacy protections to unsolicited information and tightening regulation around the use of direct marketing.
The changes are expected to be implemented through amendments to the Privacy Act 1988 and to be introduced to Parliament during the winter session of Federal Parliament.
The proposed changes follow reviews conducted by the Australian Law Reform Commission and a parliamentary committee after the release of an exposure draft of legislation in 2010 by the government.
