Adult Classification for Video Games may be delayed yet again

The NSW Attorney General’s Department has declared that the NSW Attorney General, Greg Smith, will not be voting on the R18+ classification for video games in Australia. Despite high hope on the part of the community, it now appears that the decision will be delayed again.
“We’re not going down a definitive route,” a spokesperson for Smith was quoted to have said. “More work needs to be done on this issue. We want to wait to see the results of the ALRC (Australian Law Reform Commission) classification review.” ALRC review is currently underway and is not set for release until at least early 2012. The review is looking at broader classification issues, with a view to updating Australia’s current national classification scheme.
Meanwhile, local retail industries continue to suffer as a result of purchasers buying games that do not meet the current Australian MA15+ classification from global vendors amidst already serious concerns for the Australian retail market.
