Indonesia to take Australia to WTO over Cattle Ban

It seems that the Indonesian Government has responded strongly to Australia’s decision to suspend live cattle export to Indonesia. Indonesia has alleged that Australia’s actions are discriminatory and will take the matter before the World Trade Organisation.
Australian Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig made the controversial decision to ban the export of cattle to Indonesia yesterday as a result of public outcry over certain Indonesian abattoir’s mistreatment of the livestock. But the ban has so far earned the ire of Australian farmers and now the Indonesian government.
The decision has also raised a number of concerns over existing contracts between exporters and Indonesia. Mr Ludwig has expressed that he would be keen to discuss issues of compensation with stakeholders in the industry but emphasised the need to focus on animal welfare. A spokeswoman for Mr Ludwig expressed that "Australia has the right under World Trade Organisation rules to take actions to ensure that Australian cattle are treated in accordance with international standards on animal welfare."
