AFL calls for criminal punishment of cheating in sport

It seems that one cannot go a few weeks without hearing allegations of bribery and corruption in sport on the news.
Now, the AFL is calling on the federal government to penalise cheating in sport by up to 10 years jail, echoing the NSW Law Reform Commission’s recommendation in March.
Australian gamblers fork out over $18 billion a year, with sports gambling being the fastest growing sector. Numerous international and domestic sporting leagues and organisations have had their integrity compromised by allegations of corruption and bribery.
The Criminal Code of the Commonwealth currently only penalises bribery of public and foreign public officials.
