Music piracy war: are the big labels wasting their time?

There is no evidence that illegal downloading has led to a decline in new music and it is the war on piracy itself that has docked big record label revenues by preventing them from embracing the digital age faster, new studies have found.

The new research comes after revelations last week that the entertainment industry, particularly the music business, has been frequently dishonest with the public about the impact of piracy.

Globally, recorded music sales have declined in value by 31 per cent between 2004 and 2010. Digital music sales are booming but they have not been enough to make up for the decline in high-margin physical albums.
