True Plea On Justice For Victims In NSW

Under new guidelines introduced by the State Government, victims of crime must now be told of any plea bargain deals between prosecutors and the accused before the cases go to court.

The new process is expected to reduce the number of cases where victims or their families turn up to court only to find that the accused is facing a lesser charge after agreeing to a guilty plea.

The move comes after recommendations from a Sentencing Council Report released last year which involved consultation with victims groups, the Director of Public Prosecutions and heads of the judiciary.
