Tasmanian Disability Pay Gap Push

Soon, the Health and Community Services Union will take its case to Fair Work Australia for a pay rise of up to 40 per cent for Tasmanian disability support workers.

"They have a lot of trouble bargaining, actually it's almost impossible to bargain in that industry because of the reliance on government funding.”

Some workers also believe that the gender inequity (almost 80% of the industry is female) also contributes to the wage inequity.

Tasmania hopes to bring their wages in line with those achieved in Queensland.

Do you think it is gender that contributes to wage inequity or do you think this is solely a government funding problem? What impact does this have on other wage gap debates like that of the retail services sector?
