The Australian Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR) has written to the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM) with a submission about the review of Australia’s terrorism financing legislation.

The submission also touched on the National Security Information (Criminal and Civil Proceedings) Act 2004 (Cth). ALHR urged INSLM’s report to the Prime Minister to:

  • Put emphasis on the importance and need to protect human rights in any design and implementation counter terrorism measures,
  • Explain the necessity for due process protections in relation to the implementation of UN Security Council listings,
  • Recommend further changes to the Minister’s power in relation to listings,
  • Recommend changes to the law to afford greater compensation for mistaken listing decisions, and freezing powers.
