The Economic Regulatory Authority (ERA) has recommended the Department of Water charge private companies for its services.
The State Government requested the authority investigate the option recovering some of the department's expenses.
The ERA found that, of the department's annual budget of $108 million, around $14 million could be recovered by charging private parties for new license applications and renewals.
The report is being considered.
